Making Comparisons

Differentiation Activity

Students use a paper click to spin on the spinner.  They write the numbers spun on the comparison form and try to make the statements true.  If they can make 4 true statements, they win!

Creating Six-Digit Numbers

Differentiation Activity

Students, in a group of 2 or 3, roll a dice to create the lowest six-digit number that they can.  The student with the lowest number gets one point.  The next lowest gets two points, and so on.  The student with the lowest number of points after five rounds is the winner.

Ordering Six-Digit Numbers

Differentiation Activity

Students roll a dice to create any six-digit number with the numbers rolled.  They will round their number to the nearest hundred thousand.  When all three students have their number rounded, they will order them from greatest to least.

In groups of 3, students will take turns drawing playing cards to create 1 six-digit number together.  One student will represent that number on the abacus, one in a numeral expander, and one in words.  They will switch roles each time.

Differentiation Activity

Students take turns drawing place value cards and putting a counter on the abacus in the place value that they draw.  After each card drawn, they say their new number.  When they have drawn 10 times, they write and say their final number and compare it to their partners.

Six-Digit Numbers on a Number Line

Students can either draw playing cards or roll dice to create a six-digit number.  They take turns placing the six-digit number correctly on the number line.  They can use the one below, or for more of a challenge, they can use an empty number line.

Examining 4-Digit Numbers

Fundamental Game, Differentiation Activity

Students can play the game Make it Close.  They will draw number cards and try to make a number that is closest to a hundred.  The student closest to a hundred is the winner and receives a point.  The student with the most points after 5 rounds is the winner.

In partners, one student can draw 5-digit cards from the number case, use playing cards, or dice and write their numbers on a numeral expander.  The other partner will write the number in expanded form on the recording sheet.  Partner 1 will check their work and then they switch roles.

Going Great - 4-Digit Numerals

Differentiation/ Fundamentals Game

Students can either use playing cards, dice, or numeral cards from Honeypot to creat 4-digit numbers to write down.  Students compare their numbers and make a tally based on the largest number created.
