Finding Factors

4.OA.B.4
Module 3 Lesson 6
Differentiation Activity

Take a standard number cube and make the one a seven.  Students place ten counters on their own number chart.  They roll the dice and determine if the number rolled is a factor of a number that is covered.  If it is, the student can remove the counter.  If they have more than one, they can only remove one counter at a time.  The first student to remove all their counters is the winner!

Making Comparisons

4NBT.A.2
Module 3  Lesson 5
Differentiation Activity

Students use a paper click to spin on the spinner.  They write the numbers spun on the comparison form and try to make the statements true.  If they can make 4 true statements, they win!

1,000 is 100 times more than 10.

Prime and Composite Numbers

4.OA.4
Module 3 Lesson 8
Differentiation Activity

Students will split up a Hundreds Chart in however many are in their group.  They then will cut out numbers and take turns placing them in the correct column on the Prime/Composite chart.

Creating Six-Digit Numbers

4.NBT.2  4.NBT.3
Module 3  Lesson 1
Differentiation Activity

Students, in a group of 2 or 3, roll a dice to create the lowest six-digit number that they can.  The student with the lowest number gets one point.  The next lowest gets two points, and so on.  The student with the lowest number of points after five rounds is the winner.

Ordering Six-Digit Numbers

4.NBT.1
Module 3  Lesson 3
Differentiation Activity

Students roll a dice to create any six-digit number with the numbers rolled.  They will round their number to the nearest hundred thousand.  When all three students have their number rounded, they will order them from greatest to least.

Six-Digit Place Value

4.NBT.2
Module 3
Differentiation Activity (modified)

In groups of 3, students will take turns drawing playing cards to create 1 six-digit number together.  One student will represent that number on the abacus, one in a numeral expander, and one in words.  They will switch roles each time.

Place Value on an Abacus

4.NBT.1  4.NBT.2
Module 3
Differentiation Activity

Students take turns drawing place value cards and putting a counter on the abacus in the place value that they draw.  After each card drawn, they say their new number.  When they have drawn 10 times, they write and say their final number and compare it to their partners.

Area of a Rectangle

4.MD.3
Module 3 Lesson 9&10 Differentiation

Students take turns rolling two dice and draw a rectangle on the centimeter grid paper.  The student who has the largest area after a round receives a point.  The student with the most points after five rounds is the winner.

Students can also take the same resources and find the perimeter instead of the area.

Friendly Factors

4.NBT.5
Module 3
Differentiation Activity/Fundamentals Game

Students draw a card from two separate piles and find the product of the numbers.  They might have to find factors of the larger number in order to multiply more friendly numbers.

Perfect Pairs

4.OA.4
Module 3
Differentiation Activity/Fundamentals Game

Students pick cards from three different stacks and mentally multiply them.  They must "think aloud" to explain their thinking of why they chose to multiply those numbers in that order.
