Equivalent Fraction War with Playing Cards

4.NF.A.1
Differentiation Activity
Modules 4 and 9

Students will draw out of a deck of cards (A=1, Face Cards = 10) and make a fraction.  They can make a common fraction to begin with and move to improper fractions as they continue.  They decide who has the larger fraction and the winner keeps the cards.

You can use a deck of card or online cards here:  Virtual Deck

Mixed Number Subtraction Eighths

4.NF.3,3c
Module 7
Differentiation Activity

Students draw two cards and roll a dice to make mixed numbers.  They then find the difference between the two and compare with their partner. The student with the greatest difference scores a point for that round.   The winner is the student who has the most points after 5 rounds.

Mixed Number Difference Game

5.NF.3,3c
Module 7
Differentiation Activity

Students will take the support page and separate the fractions into two piles. One pile for less than 4 and one with more than 4.  They take turns drawing from each pile and finding the difference between the two mixed numbers.  After 5 rounds, the students add up all their differences and the student with the greatest difference is the winner.

Subtracting Fractions

4.NF.3,3a
Module 7
Differentiation Activity

Students draw two fractions cards and find the difference between the two cards.  After each round, students will receive points as follows:

If the difference is:

2 or greater = 3 points
between 1-2= 2 points
1 and below= 1 point

After three rounds, the student with the most points wins!

Adding Fractions Headlines (Problem Solving)

4.NF.3,3d
Module 7
Differentiation Activity

Students can roll dice and draw eighths cards to create a mixed number addition equation.  They can use the activity Headlines from Putting the Principles Into Action by Susan O'Connell and John SanGiovanni  page 35 to connect the equation to a story.

Adding Mixed Numbers

4.NF.3,3c
Module 7
Differentiation Activity

Students draw an eighths card and roll a dice to create two mixed numbers.  They then add them together.  The student who has the greater number in the round wins a point.  The student with the most points after five rounds is the winner.

Adding Mixed Numbers

4.NF.3,3c
Module 7
Differentiation Activity

Students will draw two twelfth cards and either roll two dice or one dice twice.  They will make two mixed numbers that they will add together.  The student whose sum is greater gets a point.  The student with the most points after five rounds is the winner.

Improper Fraction Models

4.NF.2
Module 4
Differentiation Activity

Students can play a variety of mix and match games with the improper fraction, mixed number, area module, and number line model cards.  They can also participate in a whole group activity of finding the students who all have matching cards.

Area Model for Mixed Numbers

4.NF.3,3b

Adding Fractions on a Number Line

4.NF.3, 3a, 3b
Module 7
Differentiation Activity

This is a game for 2-4 players  Each player will need a game board.  Player 1 draws two cards and shows how they would add the fraction on their game board.  Player 2 does the same on their game board.  The student with the greatest fraction sum receives 4 points and the next student with the greatest receives 2. The student with the most points after 5 rounds is the winner.

Finding Common Denominators & Adding Fractions

4.OA.4  4.NF.1
Module 7
Differentiation Activity

Students can use the mix-and-match fraction cards in the Number Case to find common denominators (if needed) and then add the fractions.

Comparing Fractions

4.NF.2
Module 4
Differentiation Activity

This game can be for 2-4 students.  Each student will draw a card.  The students compare their cards.  The student with the greatest fraction receives 4 points.  The next greatest receives 2 points.  When all the cards are gone, the student with the most points is the winner.

Area Model Equivalent Fractions

4.NF.1
Module 4
Differentiation Activity

The first student will draw a rectangle with a ruler and partition it into equal parts.  They will shade in parts of that whole and write the matching fraction.  The second student will then split their fraction into smaller parts and write the equivalent fraction.

I used centimeter grid paper under a piece of white paper in a sheet protector, and it made it easier to create pieces instead of a ruler.
