Mixed Number Subtraction Eighths

Differentiation Activity

Students draw two cards and roll a dice to make mixed numbers.  They then find the difference between the two and compare with their partner. The student with the greatest difference scores a point for that round.   The winner is the student who has the most points after 5 rounds.

Differentiation Activity

Students will take the support page and separate the fractions into two piles. One pile for less than 4 and one with more than 4.  They take turns drawing from each pile and finding the difference between the two mixed numbers.  After 5 rounds, the students add up all their differences and the student with the greatest difference is the winner.

Differentiation Activity

Students draw two fractions cards and find the difference between the two cards.  After each round, students will receive points as follows:

If the difference is:

2 or greater = 3 points
between 1-2= 2 points
1 and below= 1 point

After three rounds, the student with the most points wins!

More Partial Products 2-Digit by 2-Digit

Differentiation Activity

Students take turn drawing or rolling 4 numbers (dice, playing cards, numeral cards, etc)  They then make two, two-digit numbers and multiply them using partial products.  Students will compare answers and the largest number wins a point.  The student with the most points after 5 rounds is the winner.

3-Digit by 1-Digit Partial Products Game

Differentiation Activity

Students will take turns drawing 4 cards and creating a 3-digit by 1-digit equation that they think will score them the largest product.  They will solve their equation using partial products and compare with their partner.  The student who has the largest product scores 1 point. The student with the most points after 5 rounds wins.
After Lessons 4&5, they can draw for a 4 by 1 equation.

Differentiation Activity

Student A will create a 3- by 1-digit equation using random numbers, die, numeral cards, or playing cards.  Student B will solve the equation using partial products. Students A will check the work, and they will switch roles.

Students draw two cards and find the product of the two numbers. They can use mental math, number sentences, or drawings to help them find the product.  The player that has the highest product for that round, receives the product as their score.  After three rounds, the students add up their totals and the highest wins!
